Skin Tightening with Skintyte Laser

Collagen is a significant component of our skin and plays a vital role in helping it stay hydrated and elastic. As we age, the body’s natural collagen production diminishes, leading to the appearance of loose, saggy, and crepey skin. Although collagen breakdown is typically a routine part of the aging process, it can sometimes leave us feeling self-conscious about the overall appearance of our skin. Luckily, for those looking for a solution to sagging and loose skin, the Skintyte laser/BBL is a fantastic treatment to encourage new elastin and collagen production.

Sciton’s SkinTyte/BBL (Broadband Light) treatment is one of the most exciting advancements in cosmetic skin treatments. SkinTyte by Sciton is a non-surgical, painless procedure that uses infrared energy to heat soft tissues and stimulate coagulation (a process that changes circulating substances within the blood into an insoluble gel), causing collagen contraction. The result of the collagen contraction is the gradual firming and tightening of your skin, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin in all skin types. This skin tightening results in younger, healthier-looking skin with no downtime.

If you have observed unwanted changes in your skin texture and are looking for a non-invasive solution with no downtime, board-certified surgeon Dr. Nusbaum is here to help. Dr. Nusbaum is an expert in skincare and skin tightening treatments, including the Fraxel laser, Thermage FLX, and the Sciton SkinTyte laser. Whether it be the proper skin care, the best Botox and dermal filler injections, or the latest laser treatments to stimulate new collagen production, Dr. Nusbaum is at the forefront of cosmetic skin treatments and will provide you with the best skincare.

What is the Skin Tyte laser treatment?

The SkinTyte laser is a skin-tightening cosmetic procedure that utilizes advanced infrared technology to heat the dermal layer of the skin deeply. As the laser heats the soft tissues, it simultaneously protects the epidermis (top layer of the skin’s surface) with sapphire cooling contact to ensure maximum safety and comfort for the patient during the procedure. Rapid, gentle pulses of laser energy are delivered to the skin during the procedure, promoting collagen contraction and partial coagulation. The body’s natural healing process is also induced, allowing for new collagen to form and increasing the skin’s overall firmness. By encouraging new collagen production in the skin, the SkinTyte laser results in a complexion that is more youthful, tighter, and smoother in appearance.

How does laser skin tightening treat sagging skin?

The SkinTyte procedure is a laser skin tightening treatment that effectively treats sagging skin in various body areas. Popular areas include the face, neck, abdomen, knees, thighs, buttocks, and arms. The laser utilizes advanced infrared light to deeply heat dermal collagen and firm areas with loose or sagging skin. The heat applied to the dermal layer will trigger your body’s collagen to contract and coagulate. This deep heating starts the healing process and stimulates collagen production, tightening your skin immediately, with increased collagen production over the next several months.

In addition, it is also believed that the SkinTyte laser works to activate fibroblasts which are essential for generating connective tissue and allowing the skin to recover from injury. This contributes to improvement in texture and reduced appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and minor scars. Aside from SkinTyte’s ability to improve sagging skin, the other benefit is no downtime and minimal side effects. Some patients experience minor redness and swelling after the procedure, but it usually subsides within 30 minutes. This means that you can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.

Is SkinTyte worth it?

Yes, absolutely! A study published in the Journal of Investigate Dermatology has illustrated that the SkinTyte/Sciton BroadBand Light (BBL) treatments can alter the expression of genes associated with the aging process to resemble youthful skin more closely. The study supports the hypothesis that some regulators of aging can be altered using BBL technology to provide a functional rather than just a cosmetic change. The use of BBL for treating aging skin offers a set of unique benefits. For those seeking a non-invasive skin tightening treatment to improve the skin’s overall elasticity, the SkinTyte laser treatment is an excellent cosmetic option. Dr. Nusbaum suggests SkinTyte treatment to patients because it is painless, safe, and effective for all skin types and skin tones. Since no downtime is involved, you may resume your regular activities immediately following treatment and look forward to enjoying your skin rejuvenation for months.

Does SkinTyte work?

Yes! The SkinTyte laser (BBL) has been used with great success to correct signs of aging or damaged skin, including photo-aging, vascular and pigmented lesions, fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, erythema (redness), acne scars, and acne. Typically, Dr. Nusbaum suggests patients have five BBL treatment sessions scheduled at one-month intervals to achieve the best cosmetic results. The full results from treatment are visible approximately four months after the final treatment is complete. To maintain the best skin tightening results, Dr. Nusbaum suggests maintenance treatments, scheduled every 3 to 6 months, depending on the degree of skin laxity.

Maintaining results is possible with future BBL treatments to continue delaying the signs of aging and to keep the skin looking firm, supple, and youthful. The SkinTyte laser truly works, and the results speak for themselves regarding the BBL. According to a recent American Society for Dermatologic Surgery survey, nearly 1,700,000 BBL (broadband light) type sessions were performed in 2012, making it one of the most popular aesthetic procedures in the United States.

What other laser skin treatments can be combined with Skintyte laser?

Depending on your skin concerns and aesthetic goals, several other lasers and cosmetic procedures can be combined with the SkinTyte laser. Other popular skin treatments include the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Fraxel laser, micro-needling, and chemical peels. During your consultation at Dr. Nusbaum’s office, they will create a customized treatment plan that utilizes the best lasers to help you achieve youthful, beautiful skin.

IPL is a machine that utilizes light of various wavelengths to penetrate the dermis layer of the skin without harming the epidermis (top layer). This helps remove any excess pigment that may be causing hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots, freckles, and other forms of photodamage. IPL will also help tighten the skin by delivering directed pulses of heat under the skin and triggering collagen production.

The Fraxel laser uses fractional laser technology, creating hundreds of microscopic treatment zones on the epidermal layer of the skin to treat hyperpigmentation and superficial sun damage. This is great for generalized pigmentation, discoloration, age spots, and sunspots and will result in skin that is more even in tone and texture. This procedure is safe and effective but requires a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Patients should expect 48 hours of redness and minimal swelling that will subside within one to two days. Peeling also commonly occurs.

Chemical peels use a chemical solution that can include alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids, Cosmelan peels, and/or mesopeels to treat a variety of skincare concerns. It is an excellent option if you have sun damage, age spots, sun spots, freckles, fine lines, and wrinkles, among other issues you want to treat. Chemical peels are also a good alternative if you have a darker skin tone that may not be compatible with other lasers like Fraxel due to the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Is SkinTyte safe?

Yes! The SkinTyte laser is a safe and effective FDA-approved noninvasive treatment for skin tightening. It works well for all skin types and skin tones and will work to address mild skin laxity, fine lines, irregular pigmentation, and undesirable skin texture. There is no downtime and minimal to no side effects. Pregnant individuals who have an autoimmune disease or have taken Accutane within the past six months are contraindicated and should not undergo a SkinTyte procedure.

Does SkinTyte hurt?

No, the SkinTyte procedure is painless and does not require topical numbing like other cosmetic procedures. SkinTyte uses advanced infrared light energy technology to deeply heat soft tissue and dermal collagen while continuously protecting the epidermis. It comes with sapphire contact cooling, which ensures maximum patient safety and an overall comfortable experience.

How long does SkinTyte laser take?

The total time required for performing a treatment with the SkinTyte laser will ultimately depend on the area of the body being treated. Treatment for the face and neck is typically completed within just half an hour. Since no downtime is involved, you can return to your normal daily activities immediately after completing the BBL procedure.

Is SkinTyte permanent?

No, the results of SkinTyte are not permanent, and maintenance treatments are recommended at least every six months for consistently youthful skin. Most individuals will require three to five sessions for optimal results. You should notice subtle improvement in skin laxity immediately after your very first treatment, and full results will be noticeable in a few months after your treatment series is completed, as your skin continues producing new collagen.

How long do SkinTyte results last?

The results from the SkinTyte treatment can last up to 12 months depending on your age, diet, alcohol, exercise, and skincare habits, including sun exposure. Hormone deficiencies, sun exposure, or smoking can all shorten how long the results from SkinTyte last and should be avoided. Dr. Nusbaum typically recommends a series of three to five treatments scheduled a month apart and maintenance appointments at least every six months for consistently youthful-looking skin.

Where can Skintyte be used?

The SkinTyte laser can treat the signs of aging skin in many body areas. The most common areas of the body that Dr. Nusbaum treats with BBL in our New Jersey office are the following:

  • lower face
  • upper face
  •  jowls
  •  neck
  • chest
  • backs of the hands
  • upper arms
  • abdomen
  • buttocks
  • above the knees

Does SkinTyte work on arms?

Yes! SkinTyte does work on the arms. SkinTyte will deeply heat the dermal layer of the skin to improve skin laxity and stimulate collagen growth. It can be used simultaneously to treat multiple areas at once and combined with CoolSculpting if you have excess fat on the upper arms and sagging skin.

Does SkinTyte work on the neck?

Yes! The neck and face are the most popular treatment areas for the SkinTyte laser and one of the main reasons patients choose BBL. The BBL is a popular option for neck rejuvenation due to its noninvasive nature and the procedure’s ease and painlessness. There are no side effects and zero recovery time.

Is there any preparation involved for getting SkinTyte laser treatment?

There is no preparation required for treatment with the SkinTyte laser. Since the procedure is painless, no topical anesthetic is needed. The only recommendation Dr. Nusbaum makes to patients planning a SkinTyte laser treatment is to avoid sun exposure for two to three weeks before the procedure. Patients should also not use any self-tanner for two to three weeks before. Sun protection in the form of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is essential after the procedure to maintain your results and to prevent any photodamage that can damage your skin cells and accelerate skin aging.

What is Forever Young BBL?

Forever Young BBL treatment is a technique that helps prolong the benefits of your existing BBL treatment results. Most corrective BBL uses less energy with fewer passes, but the Forever Young BBL uses multiple passes at lower energy. This technique primarily focused on maintaining the new, healthy skin and targeting skin imperfections at the molecular level. Ultimately, Forever Young BBL will continually delay the signs of skin aging. This treatment technique is great because it can effectively and safely work to treat a diverse array of patients with varying skin types and skin tones.

Those who may benefit from Forever Young BBL include:

  • Younger patients who don’t yet need correction for skin damage, but would like to delay the signs of skin aging and maintain the optimal health of their skin.
  • More mature patients who may not yet require corrective treatments because they have better quality or healthier-appearing skin but would like to optimize their youthful appearance.
  • Patients who have previously undergone a facelift or other cosmetic procedures and do not wish to have more cosmetic surgery.
  •  Patients with all skin types who want to maintain healthy skin and delay the appearance of skin aging
